Frequently asked

Stakeholder Mapping, in plain terms.

How many stakeholders should we map?

Usually thirty to sixty groups or individuals, prioritised down to a working set of ten to fifteen.

How often does the map change?

Materially, once or twice a year. Sentiment scores should be refreshed quarterly.

What if a critical stakeholder will not engage?

Then the strategy is influence through third parties they do listen to, which the map exists to identify.

Engagement budgets are usually allocated by habit

Organisations keep engaging the groups they have always engaged. Mapping by influence and current sentiment usually reveals a group nobody owns.

Sentiment matters as much as influence

A highly influential stakeholder who is broadly neutral needs different handling from a less influential one who is actively hostile. Plotting both axes changes priorities.

Every group gets a named owner

A map without assigned ownership is an exercise. Each priority stakeholder is assigned to a named executive with a review rhythm.
