Frequently asked

Music, in plain terms.

Should I sign to a label?

Depends what you need. Labels buy distribution and marketing with rights. If you have distribution, the trade is worse than it looks.

How do I get sync placements?

Registered metadata, clean rights, and someone pitching consistently. Most Indian artists fail on the first two.

What about performance royalties?

Register with the relevant society. Unregistered performances earn nothing, and this is the most common uncollected income in Indian music.

In more depth

Publishing is where the long money sits.

See the whole practice

Most artists do not know what they own

Master and publishing rights are separable and frequently signed away together for a modest advance. The first exercise is establishing what you actually hold.

Sync is the underworked revenue line

Film, advertising and streaming placements pay well and require someone actively pitching. Almost nobody does it for Indian independent artists.

Streaming revenue needs explaining

Payout structures are opaque and artists routinely misread their statements. Understanding the mechanics changes negotiating behaviour.
